Finding Aid

This collection contains individual compositions and collections composed or arranged by members of the American Moravian church in the 21^st century, or works composed by others based on Moravian texts or tunes. Most the works remain in manuscript form or the composer’s typesetting; a few are commercially published. If the composer’s life spans the turn of a century, the works in this collection are those believed to have been composed in the 21^st century. The collection represents some dozen composers thus far.

Charles G. Vardell was an American composer of national renown, who served as dean of the music departments of Salem College (Winston-Salem, NC, 1928-1951) and Flora MacDonald College until that college merged with other Presbyterian institutions and became St. Andrews College (Laurinburg, NC). The Vardell Collection contains vocal and instrumental works ranging in size from full orchestra with chorus to solo instrument or solo voice.

Abstract: The Elizabeth Artis Wright Weber Collection contains the many hymns written by E. Artis Weber, a lifelong member of the Moravian Church and wife of the Rev. F. Herbert Weber. Most of these were written as part of her personal devotions. She carefully kept her work, providing an index by first line, one by scripture passage, and a chronological index. She printed privately a number of volumes of her hymns, “Hymns and Heart Thoughts,” and distributed them to friends and congregations.

The Weiss Collection contains miscellaneous music connected to the Moravians in Pennsylvania, much of it copied by Johann Christian Till or Johann Friedrich Peter. The collection was purchased in 1983.

Abstract:        The Teague Collection contains printed sets of parts for band music from the latter nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Much of this had been the property of the numerous community and regional bands conducted by James C. Teague, Sr. (1892-1961), who also founded the band of Friedland Moravian Church in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, in 1925.

Abstract: The Tunebooks Collection contains 25 chorale or hymn tune books, of which 3 are in manuscript form. Seventeen of these are identifiable as Moravian in origin; four are prints or reprints of the 1859 publication Pennsylvania Choral Harmony.

Abstract: The Herman Julius Tietze Collection contains 37 music books, about half manuscript and half printed, collected by Herman Julius Tietze (1810-1886) and his first wife Susanna Elisabeth Stotz Tietze (1807-1865). The majority of the collection consists of piano music or vocal solos or duets with piano accompaniment, though there are a number of anthems primarily by Moravian composers.

Abstract: The Tutors Collection contains 61 printed instrumental and vocal instruction books for a variety of instruments. These are not Moravian in origin. Some were found in Moravian collections, and a significant number were donated to the Moravian Music Foundation by Irving Lowens in the 1960s.
