Rev. Adam Goodrich is a Moravian pastor, multi-instrumentalist, and folk instrument teacher. Adam’s grandfather, Robert Conrad, was a band director at Olivet Moravian Church in Winston-Salem, NC for more than 50 years. Robert was an active trombone player in the Moravian funeral band, the Bethabara Concert Band, and the Salem Band. In addition to a variety of brass instruments, he also played the mandolin, and was quite skilled at playing by ear. He lived and breathed music, and immersed Adam in music from an early age as well. He would often hum chorale tunes, and when Adam went anywhere with him in his pickup truck, they would usually listen to classical music and recordings from the low brass together.

This album is dedicated to the glory of God and in memory of Adam’s grandfather, Robert Conrad. Two of the tracks feature Robert’s mandolin.

Fierce Was the Wild Billow was one of the hymns Robert most enjoyed.

“Fierce was the wild billow, dark was the night,
oars labored heavily, foam glimmered white;
trembled the mariners, peril was nigh;
then said the God of God, Peace! It is I.”

Funeral Chorales have been used in the Moravian Church for hundreds of years.

The various tunes represent the social order of the community as well as theology.

There is a tune for each “choir”, i.e., married men, married women, single men/women, children, widows, etc. Choirs were groups of like individuals who bonded in fellowship to enrich their lives and enhance their spiritual journeys.

In the modern Moravian Church, choirs have evolved into Women’s Fellowship, Youth Fellowship, and various service groups, etc.

The chorales are suitable for choir and/or congregational singing, or used simply as instrumental music.
See also, Moravian Band Chorale Books, which contain all Moravian funeral chorales, arr. for band instruments.
The post Funeral Chorales of the Moravian Church first appeared on Moravian Music Foundation.

A Johnny Reb Band from Salem: The Pride of Tarheelia explores the history of the Twenty-sixth Regimental Band, North Carolina Troops, C.S.A., which was composed of Moravian musicians from Salem.

The 288-page paperback is a revised edition of a book originally published in 1963. The first section discusses Moravian musical traditions during the eighteenth and the first half of the nineteenth centuries. The second part traces the band’s Confederate service for a little more than three years, including their participation in the Battles of New Bern, Malvern Hill, and Gettysburg.

Profusely illustrated with pictures of Salem, band members, instruments, sheet music, and maps, this new title also contains twenty-seven sketches of camp life, not previously published. The sketches were drawn by Alexander C. Meinung, a member of the Twenty-sixth Regimental Band, and record various field scenes during the band’s military service.

The striking cover of the book features a photograph of the eight original band members taken in Salem on their first furlough during July and August 1862.

Music of the 26th NC Regiment Band
American Brass Quintet Brass Band

Among the rarities in the Moravian Music Foundation’s collections are the only known complete sets of band books from a confederate band in the American Civil War. These were brought to Salem (now Winston-Salem, North Carolina) because the 26th North Carolina Regimental Band C.S.A. was comprised wholly of Moravian musicians from Salem. This recording, based upon new scholarly editions of the works, reveals new insights into the rich musical heritage of the South, and indeed of the whole nation, in the second half of the 19th century.

This second volume of Civil War-era music was performed by the American Brass Quintet Brass Band, formed in 1980 by the members of the American Brass Quintet to perform and record America’s 19th-century brass band music on period instruments. Recorded November 1-4, 2005, at the American Academy of Arts and Letters, New York City.
