Reprinted from Civil War History, September 1958

Julius Leinbach, from Salem, NC, was a musician in the 26th NC Regiment Band, and served for most of the wartime. He leaves us a dramatic and colorfully detailed account of what occurred in battle and behind the scenes during the battle of Gettysburg.

“…our playing had been heard across the lines… Some little while after we left, a bomb struck and exploded very close to the place where we had been standing, no doubt having been intended for us.”
The post Regiment Band of the Twenty-Sixth North Carolina first appeared on Moravian Music Foundation.

A Johnny Reb Band from Salem: The Pride of Tarheelia explores the history of the Twenty-sixth Regimental Band, North Carolina Troops, C.S.A., which was composed of Moravian musicians from Salem.

The 288-page paperback is a revised edition of a book originally published in 1963. The first section discusses Moravian musical traditions during the eighteenth and the first half of the nineteenth centuries. The second part traces the band’s Confederate service for a little more than three years, including their participation in the Battles of New Bern, Malvern Hill, and Gettysburg.

Profusely illustrated with pictures of Salem, band members, instruments, sheet music, and maps, this new title also contains twenty-seven sketches of camp life, not previously published. The sketches were drawn by Alexander C. Meinung, a member of the Twenty-sixth Regimental Band, and record various field scenes during the band’s military service.

The striking cover of the book features a photograph of the eight original band members taken in Salem on their first furlough during July and August 1862.

Music of the 26th NC Regiment Band
The American Brass Quintet Brass Band

Among the rarities in the Moravian Music Foundation’s collections are the only known complete sets of band books from a confederate band in the American Civil War. These were brought to Salem (now Winston-Salem, North Carolina) because the 26th North Carolina Regimental Band C.S.A. was comprised wholly of Moravian musicians from Salem. This recording, based upon new scholarly editions of the works, reveals new insights into the rich musical heritage of the South, and indeed of the whole nation, in the second half of the 19th century.

This first volume of Civil War-era music was performed by the American Brass Quintet Brass Band, formed in 1980 by the members of the American Brass Quintet to perform and record America’s 19th-century brass band music on period instruments. Recorded in 2002.
