The Psalm of Joy and the Celebration of Peace

Recognizing that music is a means of proclaiming the Gospel, we celebrate Moravian music on the fifth Sunday of Easter. At a time when our own world seems to be rapidly changing, we can find some comfort in listening to the sounds of earlier Moravians who also recognized that through it all, God’s love remains eternal.

              All voices welcome !

Celebrating Hellström, Voullaire, and Moravian Romanticism: Treasures of 19^th Century Moravian Music

Recognizing that music is a means of proclaiming the Gospel, we celebrate Moravian music on the fifth Sunday of Easter. At a time when our own world seems to be rapidly changing, we can find some comfort in listening to the sounds of earlier Moravians who also recognized that through it all, God’s love remains eternal.

The Moramus Chorale partners with the Great Sabbath Service of Music in 2025. 

Amanda Schumpert and Mary Louise Kapp Peeples will lead both the Great Sabbath Service and the Moramus Chorale. Amanda has recently been named the Music Director for the Moramus Chorale, creating the natural opportunity to combine efforts and support both programs this year.

The Great Sabbath Service of Music and Worship will be at Home Moravian Church, 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 19 when we will be presenting the Seven Last Words from the Cross, by Dubois. This music was presented at the first Great Sabbath Service of Music and Worship in 1925, the year it transitioned from a community Lovefeast to a service of music.

The Moramus Chorale’s “In the Beginning…” concert will be presented at the Old Salem Visitor Center, 7:00 p.m. on Friday, May 16 featuring anthems by C. I. Latrobe, John Antes, and Christian Gregor, and the music of Franz Josef Haydn: movements from THE CREATION.

Singers Wanted for Moramus Chorale, a performing ensemble of the Moravian Music Foundation. The Chorale seeks talented singers, with an interest in Moravian music, who welcome a challenge and are committed to excellence.

“Joint” rehearsals for both performances will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday March 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30 and April 6 in the Fellowship Hall of Home Moravian Church. We are planning to rehearse Great Sabbath music from 3:00 p.m. to about 4:00 p.m. and Moramus Chorale music from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

All Great Sabbath singers are encouraged to stay until 5:00 p.m.
and
all Moramus Chorale singers are encouraged to come at 3:00 p.m.

Additional “Moramus Chorale only” rehearsals are planned for Sunday, April 27 and May 4 , again 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of Home Moravian Church,  as well as a dress rehearsal at the Old Salem Visitors Center on Saturday, May 10, at 10am. A Great Sabbath dress rehearsal with orchestra is planned for 7:00 p.m. on Friday, April 11 in the Home Moravian Church sanctuary. A performance of the Great Sabbath music is also planned for 3:00 p.m. at Salemtowne on Sunday, April 13. 

• It is very important that you pre-register so that we can make sure we have sufficient copies of the music. Please call or email Ted Leinbach (704-519-5428 or tedleinbach@aol.com) to register indicating you will be singing with the Great Sabbath chorus, the Moramus Chorale, or hopefully both. 
• Please be sure to indicate your voice part.

Social Piano

Social Piano is a group of adult piano players in the Triad area who get together to play for each other and share the joys and frustrations of playing the piano. It’s also a good opportunity to share information about upcoming music events or seek advice. Our objective is to play the piano for the sheer fun of it and to build relationships with other pianists.

We currently have members who are lifelong pianists, piano teachers, church musicians and those who have been studying piano for 5 years and are continuing to hone their craft. Some of us play for ourselves and others are used to performing.

We meet on the third Monday of each month at the Moravian Music Foundation, 457 S. Church St., Winston-Salem at 1:00 PM for 90 minutes to 2 hours.

We’d like to invite adult piano players who are at intermediate level and above to consider joining us for an afternoon of social interaction and playing the piano. If you’re interested, please send a note to kwinnmill@gmail.com. We’d love to hear from you!

In a typical meeting, after catching up and sharing, we usually start with a fun activity either at the piano or testing our music knowledge. Chopsticks and Charlie Chipmunk have debuted at recent gatherings as well as “Name That Tune” competitions. We encourage duets, but members play solo selections of their choice, too.
