The Moravian Lower Brass is the band equivalent of the sonority of a men’s chorus and produces a mellow, rich, and uniquely expressive sound. The 50 players participating in this recording include members of eighteen Moravian churches and fellowships and seven non-Moravian churches. The music of this recording is taken from the chorale books of the Moravian Church in America.

Back by popular demand, the Moravian Lower Brass ensemble recorded Moravian music for Lent and Easter on January 10-12, 2014.

The Moravian Lower Brass is made up of trombones, baritones, and tubas and bass horns of all sizes and keys – any tenor or bass brass instrument is welcome! The group plays at churches, civic clubs, annually at a game of the Winston-Salem Dash (baseball team), and pretty much wherever they can.

54 players, from 27 congregations, took part in the recording. MMF Assistant Director Gwyn Michel served once again as our “ears” (that is, producer), with MMF board member Frank Martin as recording engineer and MMF director Nola Knouse conducting. Also participating were MMF office manager Margaret Brady in the alto section, MMF business manager Erik Salzwedel, and MMF current and former board members Chris Jones, Mike Cude, Ray Gatland, Robbie Alphin, Allen Goslen, Joey Transou, Richard Henderson, Jerry Smith, and former MMF Development Director, Bart Collins.

There is a descant book with several selected tunes from both the GREEN and BLUE series.

Chorale books contain tunes from the Moravian Church and ancient Unitas Fratrum, but also many hymns from other denominations.

The following is the instrumentation breakdown of the individual books for the BLUE books. The BLUE books contain 175 different tunes (different from those in the GREEN book) including Rock of Ages and Amazing Grace

The Soprano is always the melody. The other parts are always harmony.

There are 4 “parts” in the set, SATB, but there is a descant book available in the BLUE series that contains some tunes from the GREEN and some from the BLUE book.

Julius Leinbach, from Salem, NC, was a musician in the 26th NC Regiment Band, and served for most of the wartime. He leaves us a dramatic and colorfully detailed account of what occurred in battle and behind the scenes during the battle of Gettysburg.

“…our playing had been heard across the lines…  Some little while after we left, a bomb struck and exploded very close to the place where we had been standing, no doubt having been intended for us.”
