We will be preparing the Psalm of Joy which is an ode created for the first organized Fourth of July Celebration in the nation! By the Moravians of Salem, NC in 1783. The ode was created by Joh. Friedrich Peter.

Unitas will present the Psalm of Joy in whole or in part on conjunction with these events:

  • May 8: Bethlehem Bach Choir Festival
  • July 11: Heritage Day (Easton, PA)

The Unitas Chorale serves as the Northern Province performing arm of the Moravian Music Foundation. This choral ensemble was formed in 1996 with the support of the Foundation to provide an opportunity both for the performance of selections from the archival collections and newly-written Moravian music in the Lehigh Valley area and beyond.

The Chorale rehearses on the second and fourth Sundays of the month, with a final concert in the spring.

Membership in the Chorale is open to any interested singers; you are cordially invited to speak to the director or any Chorale member if you are interested in joining.

with the Moramus Chorale

The Singstunde (hour of singing) will be a collaborative effort, creating an evening of concert and worship. It will be creatively structured with the Moramus Chorale singing several anthems unto themselves, surrounded by congregational hymns, and some instrumental selections.

This event is free and open to the public.
A free-will offering will be received with proceeds to benefit Sunnyside Ministry. Donations should be made to Moravian Music Foundation, a 501c3 non-profit organization. Donations of non-perishable food items will also be accepted at the door for Sunnyside.

Serenades

The Moravian Music Foundation (MMF) presents a wide variety of music to engage, inspire, educate, and entertain all who are touched by the power of music. Some music, both sacred and secular, is presented in concert but often we share music in more intimate settings, such as:

~ Chamber concerts of musical treasures from the Moravian collections;
~ Moravian Singstunde (hour of singing or “hymn-sing”), incorporating the audience into the experience, as the congregation;
~ Informative lecture/recitals by guest musicians/researchers on a particular discovery or Moravian music research topic.

All of these musical events and experiences are Serenades and we invite you to immerse yourself in the warmth of choral and instrumental music from the extensive Moravian musical heritage.

MMF Serenade Concerts are Free and Open to the Public.

About Gwyn

Gwyneth Michel became director of Unitas Chorale in 2012, succeeding Jill Bruckart, the ensemble’s founding director. Gwyn also serves as Director of Music at College Hill Moravian Church in Bethlehem, PA. Gwyn was Assistant Director of the Moravian Music Foundation from 2007 – 2022, being mainly responsible for the Foundation’s Bethlehem office and its Northern Province holdings, guiding MMF music publications, serving as a musical resource for the Northern Province, and numerous other duties. Gwyn came to MMF as a veteran of the music publishing industry, having served as church music editor for three major publishing companies for 30 years. She received a bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Moravian College (now Moravian University) and a master’s in Church Music from Westminster Choir College.

In 2018, Gwyn was awarded the James V. Salzwedel Award for Excellence in Church Music.
The award reads:

As Assistant Director of the Moravian Music Foundation since 2007, your contributions to church music have been legion and continually go far beyond your Moravian Music Foundation job description. You have served as a musician and resource person for Moravian Church Synods – chasing copyrights, accompanying, assisting with all aspects of music and worship, working in a variety of circumstances. Throughout the Moravian Church, you provide assistance with selecting and arranging music, managing copyrights, overseeing lending library loans, providing personalized “care and feeding” of church musicians, and leading workshops throughout the country. As Director of the Unitas Chorale, you provide excellent choral instruction for the more than 50 singers who then share their enhanced skills with their own congregations.

As a skilled and experienced music editor, you ensured the accuracy and clarity of the groundbreaking publication of Sing to the Lord a New Song. You have brought the Moravian Star Anthem Series and all Moravian Music Foundation publications to high artistic and technical standards, representing the composers’ best intentions in historical editions, and assisting living composers to bring their artistry to best light, always attending to the breadth and quality of all these publications. With all Moravian musical events and Festivals, you provide exceptional service in all aspects, from leading workshops at very short notice to accompanying late-night emergency room visits!

As an active church musician now serving College Hill Moravian Church, you have attracted many college students into active church music work; you have involved many congregation members throughout the music program; and you provide excellent leadership in all aspects of music and worship in the church. You have shown great ability to adapt quickly to different working conditions and styles of worship throughout your career as organist and choral director, from Pennsylvania to South Florida; from Neuwied-am-Rhein, Germany, to Cape Town, South Africa.

For your dedicated service; your joyful sharing of the gift of music in and beyond worship; and your contribution to the preservation, sharing, and celebration of Moravian musical culture, the Board of Trustees of the Moravian Music Foundation takes great delight in presenting to you the James V. About Brian

Brian C. Snyder

Brian grew up in Nazareth, PA and is a 1983 graduate of Nazareth Area High School. Having grown up attending St. John’s UCC in Nazareth, Brian studied organ with Floyd Schlegel and served frequently as an accompanist for the music program there. While in High School Brian participated in District, Regional and State Chorus Festivals every year as both an accompanist and a choral baritone. Brian assumed his first position while still in High School, that of assistant organist at the now closed St. Paul’s Lutheran Church on Easton’s South Side.
From 1983 to 1996 Brian served as organist at First UCC Milford, NJ.
In 1996 Brian took the position of organist at First Reformed Church of the UCC, Hamburg, PA. 
While there he also took on the position of choir director for the first time in his life. 
In 2012 Brian became organist and Senior Choir Director of Faith Presbyterian Church, Emmaus, PA.
In November 2022, Brian became Organist at Nazareth Moravian Church.
Besides music Brian likes old movies and TV shows, duplicate bridge, cooking, and baking.

About Luke

Luke DiGiacinto is a 2017 graduate of Moravian University, Magna Cum Laude, with a Bachelor of Music degree in Sacred Music focusing on Organ and Voice. He has been working in church music for just about 5 years. He currently serves Advent Moravian Church in Bethlehem, Hanover township, where he is organist and director of music. His responsibilities include playing the organ, directing the Chancel Choir and Bell Choir, and helps with the brass ensemble. He previously served as organist for Morning Star Moravian, and West Side Moravian.

His teachers included Naoko Cauller, and Dr. Martha Schrempel for Piano, Robert Ormesher, and Greg Oaten for Voice, and Russell Jackson, Michael Krentz, Rebecca Lepore, Lou-Carol Fix, and Thomas Goeman for Organ.

He serves as ceremony organist at Moravian University, his alma mater, and has accompanied across the valley. He has served as wedding organist for Central Moravian Church on numerous occasions. Luke sings with the Bach choir of Bethlehem, and has sung with the Allentown symphony chorus, and Camerata singer’s. Luke is an active recitalist, and has recently started teaching. Luke is very involved the the local chapter of the American Guild of Organists, and currently serves as a board member, Education Coordinator, and was the services coordinator and a presenter of the June 2022 Pipe Organ encounter plus. While a student, Luke received a number of accolades and awards from Moravian University including the Walter Schrempel prize, and the Richard Van Auken prize in music. For keyboard excellence, Luke received the Betty Airestock Moore, T Edgar Shields, and Jacobs Music Awards. Luke takes particular interest in the Organ Music of 17th and 18th France, and North German Baroque organ music. He loves ethno-musicology, pinball, his back patio, and partner dancing.

Notes from Nola … The Moravian Music Foundation celebrates …

Continuing my series on the Moravian Music Foundation’s mission statement, what do we mean by “celebrating”?

The Moravian Music Foundation preserves, shares, and celebrates Moravian musical culture.

What do we celebrate in our world? Anniversaries … birthdays … all sorts of special occasions … maybe a new job, or a promotion, or a retirement … all sorts of transitions. Accomplishments of many kinds merit acknowledgment and celebration. And a lot of these include music – from a family singing “happy birthday” to bringing in a dance band.

Celebrating is certainly part of Moravian history and culture. Think of the annual remembrances that are common to all Christian churches – the birth of Christ; the passion, death, and resurrection of Christ; ascension; congregational anniversaries. All of these are in our Moravian world, as well as several others. Think of the special Moravian commemorations – the martyrdom of John Hus (July 6); the renewal of the Moravian Church (August 13); the acknowledgment of Jesus Christ as the Chief Elder of the Moravian Church (November 13). Special services have been held for these Moravian festivals for many generations, and there is a wealth of hymns and anthems written especially for these days. And many Moravian congregations have special celebrations for groups within the church. Some have a “workers’ lovefeast”, acknowledging the many contributions of members to the life and work of the church throughout the year. The Southern Province has an annual Children’s Festival in August, and music is certainly a part of that every year. Some still celebrate the “choir festivals” – single brothers, single sisters, married people, and so on.

But what, especially, does the Moravian Music Foundation do to “celebrate Moravian musical culture?” Our “celebration” work covers a lot of activites. Some of these are …

  • holding Moravian Music Festivals every four years. (Note: Due to the Covid 19 pandemic, the 2021 Festival was held online with a Part II set for July 26, 2022 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania). Watch for updates, and plan to come …
  • holding Moravian Music Weekends. We’ve now hosted 8 of these at Laurel Ridge Camp, Conference, and Retreat Center in the mountains of North Carolina, and we’d love to hold these at other locations as well. Interested in one in your area? Let’s talk about how to make it happen.
  • sponsoring the Unitas Chorale in Pennsylvania and the Moramus Chorale in North Carolina. These two groups of singers rehearse and perform Moravian music and other music complementary to it – perhaps music by composers the Moravians knew and loved, or music written on Moravian tunes or texts. Both groups welcome new singers at any time, and our office can put you in touch with the directors (Gwyn Michel with the Unitas Chorale and Drake Flynt with the Moramus Chorale).
  • providing music and programming assistance for other groups wanting to perform music from our collections. Many professional and amateur musical groups (and individual performers) contact our office each year asking about music, and we help by suggesting music to fit their programming wishes, their available musicians, and so on. We make the Lending Libraries available to all who contact us (a future post will say more!), or we sell our own publications. We’re happy to provide background information and program notes.
  • helping Moravian congregations celebrate special occasions – providing music and liturgy suggestions for the services of dedication (or re-dedication) of or a building; for a special anniversary; for a vacation Bible school; for a children’s hand chimes group; for almost anything a congregation wants to celebrate with music!
  • helping congregations, Moravian and many other denominations, who want to hold a Moravian lovefeast or candle service. We can send music suggestions, practical ideas for how to hold it, information about obtaining candles or lovefeast buns, suggested orders of worship, and so on.

When you think of celebrating, then, you may already think of music. And we hope that as your congregation or organization thinks of future celebrations, you’ll remember that the Moravian Music Foundation is here to help with music suggestions for almost any occasion!

The post Notes from Nola – the Unitas Chorale first appeared on Moravian Music Foundation.]]> The Moravian Music Foundation preserves, shares, and celebrates Moravian musical culture.

The Unitas Chorale was founded in the fall of 1996 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, by the Moravian Music Foundation, under the impetus of the energy and organizational skills of founding director Jill Bruckart. Unitas’s purpose is to provide an opportunity for the performance of both selections from the Foundation’s archival collections and newly-written Moravian music. Membership in Unitas is open to any interested singers; just talk to the director or any Chorale member!

Jill Bruckart remained the director of the Unitas Chorale through the 2011 concert season. With the 2011-2012 season, MMF’s Assistant Director Gwyneth Michel became the director of the Unitas Chorale. Now entering her 8th year, Gwyn is working on programming for spring 2019, and would love to hear from you if you’re interested in joining! The Chorale rehearses the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sundays of the month, January through April, with a concert late April or early May.

Like the Moramus Chorale, this performing arm of the Moravian Music Foundation provides excellent quality choral singing experiences for its participants, and uplifting concert programs for its home community – and sometimes beyond!

Each year, Gwyn chooses a theme and crafts the concert program exploring that theme. For 2019 the Chorale will focus on The Passion of Christ: A Walk With Our Lord Through Holy Week. This year’s concert will be on Sunday, May 5, 2019, at a location to be determined.

Looking for a new venture to help you keep that New Year’s Resolution to do something wonderful for yourself and others? Why not sing in the Unitas Chorale? Contact conductor Gwyn Michel – gwyn@dev.thesignalcompany.com/foundation – and she’ll be happy to have you join in! The first rehearsal for 2019 is scheduled for Sunday, January 6, 3:00-5:00 p.m., at College Hill Moravian Church in Bethlehem, weather permitting. There is no audition required, just an interest in performing choral music and a commitment to come to rehearsals.
