Christian Ludwig Brau (1746-1777) was born in Drammen, Norway, but was educated in Moravian schools in the Netherlands and Germany. He wanted to become a missionary to the West Indies, but his health was poor and could not stand up to the rigors of that calling. Instead, he was able to put his musical gifts to good use working with children in Moravian schools in Gnadau, Zeist, and elsewhere. In 1776, ill health forced him to give up teaching, and he was called to Barby to recuperate. He died there on February 17, 1777, at only thirty-one years of age.
