Karl Heinrich Graun (1704-1759) is one of several German composers who, though not themselves Moravians, were highly regarded among the Moravians. Although he was best known as an opera composer, he also composed masses, cantatas, and other sacred vocal works. Movements from his Passion cantatas are found in virtually all 18th-century Moravian music collections.
Christ By His One Sacrifice, from Graun’s Ein Lämmlein geht und trägt die Schuld, was edited from manuscript copies from the Salem Collegium Musicum collection and the Philharmonic Society of Bethlehem collection. The work is originally scored for 3 oboe d’amore, bassoon, strings, and organ. Full score and parts are available from the Moravian Music Foundation.
The funding for this publication was provided by Mr. and Mrs. G. Randall Gibbs to honor the faithful service and dedication of the Chancel Choir to the First Moravian Church of Dover, Ohio.
