Realizing Figured Bass
ONLINE
Sept. 26, 2025
12:00pm – 1:30pm
In many Baroque and early-Classical era tunebooks, such as Christian Gregor’s 1784 Choralbuch, harmonizations were not written out as they are in modern day hymnals. Instead, they used what is called “Figured Bass” which allowed musicians (especially organists) to be able to harmonize music, while only looking at a melody and bass line. In this class, we will go over figured bass notation, what it means, and how to realize it with written music. A general foundation of music theory is recommended for this class.

Moravian Tunebooks
In-Person
August 23, 2025

In the 18th Century, the American Tunebook tradition was born. This period signaled a renaissance in American music, with composers such as William Billings, Andrew Law, Josiah Flagg, and William Selby, among others, and the advent of the New England Singing School tradition. This month, come learn about this unique piece of Moravian musical history, as well as the American Tunebook tradition. Learn how to read the tunebook format and some of the methods used to teach music in the early days of America. We will meet from 1:00-3:00p at West Side Moravian Church on Saturday, August 23rd.
