Ernst Wilhelm Wolf (1735-1792) was born in Grossenbehringen, Germany. After studies at the Eisenach and Gotha Gymnasien, he entered the University of Jena, where he was made director of the Collegium musicum. He was active in Naumburg as a music teacher to the von Ponickau family before becoming music tutor to the sons of Duchess Anna Amalia in Weimar. He was later named court Konzertmeister, organist, and Kapellmeister there. While he was not a Moravian, a number of his anthems, along with his Easter Cantata, survive in Moravian collections in various locations around the world. Saints and Angels Joined in Concert (Schlaf in Frieden, frey vom Jammer) was edited by Corey J. Smith and Nola Reed Knouse manuscripts in the Salem Congregation Collection and Herbst Collection. Although the English text is not a translation of the German, both texts are associated with this music in early copies. The work is originally scored for oboe, 2 bassoons, strings and organ. Full score and parts are available from the Moravian Music Foundation.
The publication of this anthem is sponsored by the Great Sabbath Committee of the Salem Congregation in honor of Margaret Louise Styers, in gratitude for her many faithful years of service on the Great Sabbath Committee, in her attention to detail, her reliable work, and her commitment to the Great Sabbath Service of Music.
