A concert in celebration of the 200th Anniversary of the birth of Salem Composer Francis Florentine Hagen (1815 – 1907) the composer of “Morning Star,” who was born in Salem. Featuring a pre-concert talk : “The Man Who Wrote ‘The Morning Star” by The Rev. Dr. Nola Reed Knouse, Director of the Moravian Music Foundation.
This performance will include choral works performed by The Moramus Chorale, the singing of “Morning Star,” and works for organ and piano.
FREE and open to the public.
Hagen was born on October 30, 1815, grew up in Salem, and attended the Moravian Theological Seminary in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. He is best known as the composer of “Morning Star,” a favorite Moravian Christmas hymn.As a pastor Hagan served Moravian congregations in North Carolina, Iowa, New York, and Pennsylvania, where he retired. He died in Lititz, Pennsylvania, on July 7, 1907.
