In the 18th Century, the American Tunebook tradition was born. This period signaled a renaissance in American music, with composers such as William Billings, Andrew Law, Josiah Flagg, and William Selby, among others, and the advent of the New England Singing School tradition. During the height of this tradition, Peter Wolle published the first American-Moravian tunebook in Philadelphia, PA in 1836. This month, come learn about this unique piece of Moravian musical history, as well as the American Tunebook tradition. Learn how to read the tunebook format and some of the methods used to teach music in the early days of America. To ensure we have enough material for everyone, please be sure to register!
Figured Bass allowed musicians to be able to harmonize music, while only looking at a melody and bass line. In this class, we will decipher figured bass notation and how to "realize" it (write out all the notes). A general foundation of music theory is recommended for this class.
A gateway into the world of digital music notation, MuseScore is a free software. If you are seeking to transcribe your written music, publish your compositions, or simply want to learn the ins and outs of notation software, this class is for you.
Last Spring, in our Hymn-writing class, we worked on developing our philosophy of hymn-writing. This class will seek submissions and review newly written texts, tunes, harmonized chorales, and other settings of congregational music.
