Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) needs no introduction to music-lovers, but the fact that much of his music is found in the holdings of American Moravians is intriguing. Several of his vocal works found their way to the New World in the later eighteenth century, including this one which is found in the congregation music collections of several of the early American Moravian settlements.
Wounded Lamb! By Your Self-Offering was edited for the Piedmont Chamber Singers of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, from manuscript copies from the Salem Congregation collection. The music is familiar as that of Mozart’s beloved Ave Verum Corpus, with an anonymous text which is found in the 1778 German Moravian hymnal. The work is originally scored for strings and organ. Full score and parts are available from the Moravian Music Foundation.
The funding for this anthem was provided by the Chancel Choir and congregation of Olivet Moravian Church of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, in memory of N. Denny Fordham, Jr. Denny was Director of Music from 1986 to 2006.
