Please join us, to sing along or just enjoy, hymns and hymn arrangements in the traditional Moravian Singstunde (hour of singing), celebrating our love for Christ and each other, and hope for recovery and healing.
In light of recent circumstances, we have made the decision to move our originally scheduled performance (“In the Beginning”) from October 25, 2024, to May 16, 2025. In its place, 7:45pm on Oct 25, we will be offering a Singstunde of Love and Hope dedicated to our brothers and sisters of western North Carolina.
We will take a love offering that evening in which all proceeds will go to aid the victims of Hurricane Helene in our beloved state.
Baked goods and drinks will also be for sale with all money raised going to the same cause.
For over 300 years, Moravians have turned to song to praise God, seek comfort, and find community. Accompanied by Mary Lou Kapp Peeples on the 1800 Tannenberg and members of the Moramus Chorale, we will all join in lifting our voices in love and hope singing hymns drawn from the 1923, 1969, and 1995 hymnbooks. Whether you come to sing or simply listen, we hope that you can join us in this Moravian tradition of song, community, and stewardship.
For those unfamiliar with the practice, the Singstunde (“hour of singing”) is a service dedicated exclusively to the singing of hymn tunes, which Zinzendorf described as “a remarkable beauty of our church.” Through selected texts, a theme emerges that binds the music together. It is a powerful reminder of both the importance of hymns in the Moravian church, as well as the ability of music to bring people together into a shared community.
This event made possible with the generous support of Old Salem Museums and Gardens (about Old Salem)
Additional note for ticket buyers: If you purchased tickets for the October 25 performance, you will be able to use them for the May 16 concert.
The Moramus Chorale is a performing and recording vocal ensemble of the Moravian Music Foundation. They have premiered new works by living composers and presented “first modern performances” of many (newly edited) works by historic composers. Chorale seeks talented singers, with an interest in Moravian music, who welcome a challenge and are committed to excellence.
