“The Easter Cantata (Osterkantate) by Ernst Wilhelm Wolf”
Nola Reed Knouse. Archie K. Davis Center, Winston-Salem, NC.
Episode 14 – January 9, 2014
The Easter Cantatas by Ernst Wilhelm Wolf. Biographical information about Ernst Wilhelm Wolf reveals the context in which the Moravians knew Wolf’s musical works. Wolf’s Easter Cantata was very popular with the Moravians in settlement congregations in America and throughout the world (such as South Africa and Labrador). From the sources at the Moravian Music Foundation, David Blum edited a new edition of the Easter Cantata, published by the Foundation. An extra movement, found in the parts, is not found in the published full score. The identity of the movement, by Naumann, is explored. Musical excerpts are played.
